January 17, 2010
Scoutmaster Al Hansen was the recipient of the Battleground District's highest volunteer award, The District Award of Merit. This award recognizes outstanding performance in scouting with a minimum five years of service. Selection is determined by votes from adult leaders in our district. Al Hansen has eight distinguished years of service in scouting and began his leadership as a Wolf den leader on the 50th anniversary of Pack 101 Fisrt Baptist Church. As a Bear leader, Al was part of the adult leader team who earned Pack of The Year for 2003. While a Webelos 1 den leader  Al assumed the resposnibilities of cubmaster for Pack 101, earning the Silver Anniversary Pack award on the 75th anniversary of cub scouting. Al continued leading the pack as a Webelos 2 den leader and during his first year as assistant scoutmaster for troop 101. Throughout his tenure with cub scouts, the pack earned The Summertime award and Quality Unit award every year. Al also innovated and improved the pack's pinewood derby. Al replaced Don Costner as scoutmaster in 2007 and celebrated the 25th anniversary of Camp Bud Schiele. He earned the Boy Scout Leaders Training award and the God and Service award (see below May 3,2009). His leadership and direction in the unit was reflected in receiving Troop of TheYear 2008. With the Best of Bud Schiele Week 2 (2009), Clean Camp Site Award (2009), and the Flay L. Cook Fall Camporee trophey (2009), Al completed the year by earning the National Eage Scout Association Scoutmaster's Service award. Al Hansen, Scoutmaster of Troop 101, chartered by First Baptist Church, received the God and Service Award from P.R.A.Y. (Programs of Religious Activities with Youth) on May 3 at Family Worship Center in Kings Mountain. Throughout the USA, only 300 individuals receive this prestigious award each year, an average of six recipients per state. Al Hansen met all of the requirements, including five years tenure at his church, Al has worked with youth, prepared the newsletter, and volunteers as a sound technician for services and revivals. As Scoutmaster, Al recruited a troop chaplain, expanded the role of the chaplain’s aide, promoted attendance for Scout Sunday and camp worship services, contributed food to a local ministry that assists men overcoming alcoholism and drug addition, and utilized a troop program that encouraged adult leaders to assist newly organized units and units lacking adequate adult leadership. The God and Service Award was introduced by his pastor, Bishop Roger Woodard, and presented by his assistant Scoutmaster Carl Anderson. We congratulate Al Hansen for his dedication and service to God and our youth, which earned his adult leader religious knot.

Carl Anderson was awarded the District Award of Merit for the countless hours he has worked in scouting over the past 7 years. The District Award of Merit is the highest award a district volunteer can receive with the Boy Scouts of America. For five years Carl has been a Den Leader with Pack 101 and for the last two years worked as an assistant scoutmaster with Troop 101. This past year, Carl has also taken on the role as District Trainer working to help train adults leaders for their respective scouting positions.
